
The ArchiMed research group, affiliated with the University of Geneva and the Geneva University Hospitals (archimed.unige.ch), is pleased to welcome Dr Mathew Beale from the Wellcome Sanger Institute (London) and Dr Giulia Bommarito from the Leenaards Memory Centre, CHUV (Lausanne).

- 13:00–14:00 “MRI: a window into brain inflammation” by Dr. Bommarito
The microbiologist Mathew Beale, PhD, leads a research program aimed at characterizing the global diversity and transmission dynamics of several sexually transmitted infections, particularly Treponema pallidum, the causative agent of syphilis. His expertise includes large-scale genomics, metagenomics, and phylogenomics to elucidate pathogen evolution and epidemiology.

The neurologist Giulia Bommarito, MD, completed her clinical training at the University of Padua and the University of Genoa in Italy. She developed her research expertise in neuroimaging and in neuroinflammatory, neurodegenerative disorders at the Mount Sinai School of Medicine in New York and at EPFL–University of Geneva in Geneva. She currently serves as Chief Resident at the Leenaards Memory Centre, CHUV, Lausanne.


The ArchiMed–Geneva team is organizing a public symposium on Thursday, 30 January 2025, devoted to the exploration of pathological archives. Four speakers from different disciplines will successively present their expertise on the topic:

The collection of psychiatric films from the Waldau, the first university psychiatric hospital in Switzerland (Bern), and its investigation (by Mireille Berton & Jessica Schüpbach),

Commentary on this collection and on the exploration of the human archives associated with the Waldau (by Hubert Steinke),

Legal considerations regarding the status of the cadaver and anatomical or pathological collections (by Nicolas Tschumy).
